THE PROBLEM
The well-publicized shortage of IT personnel has evolved our industry to a point where personnel are viewed as a commodity -- something to be bid for and traded as demand dictates. This has led to an increased focus on finding personnel, shifting focus from quality and methodology.
The Internet revolution has only exacerbated this problem.
The arrival of monster.com and similar web sites have provided an efficient, global market for uniting those seeking employment and those seeking to fill positions. Staffing firms merely need to “work the database” to (hopefully) pre-qualify candidates, ensuring that when they obtain a “req” for a position from a customer, it can be filled swiftly.
Although these firms claim to be consultancies, they are truly just employment agencies. Consequently, purported training programs, staff evaluations and quality control measures are more fantasy than reality. Most “Project Leaders” are simply commissioned salespeople, often non-technical and rarely interested in (or compensated for) post-placement activities.
